HUSK is a not for profit, non government organisation working to improve the lives of families in Siem Reap Cambodia.
HUSK’s core focus is working (initially) with the communities in Treak and Kompheim villages located in Siem Reap province Cambodia. Our philosophies are simple and centre around helping people to improve their lives, and create opportunities for a brighter and healthier future.
Siem Reap Cambodia, home to one of the most incredible wonders of the world, The Temples of Angkor, and a country rich in traditions and culture that intertwine with the temples still today. More than the amazing temples though Siem Reap and Cambodia is home to a warm and friendly people that smile, despite the troubles of the not so distant past and the challenges faced by nearly every family today.
Cambodia has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the region with one in seven children dying before the age of five. Many of these deaths are due to preventable illness and waterborne disease. Malnutrition, lack of education and accidental death (drowning and road accidents) are major issues Cambodia’s children face.
HUSK works with communities to help improve the lives of Cambodian families. Our goals focus around the basics of providing access to safe water, livelihood opportunities, health, education and environment.
We visited Kompheim Village (which means Lady Bug) with attendees of the Siem Reap Do in February and were moved by the work this charity does. Anyone who is visiting Siem Reap, we would recommend doing the Day in the Life experience. Below you can see pictures of some of the water filters the group bought for the village.
Our wish list for the event is as follows (obviously if we can beat this, more the better):
$1200 - Enables us to rebuild an entire house for a family
$65 - Provides the family with a water filter - giving them the ability to drink safe, clean water
$120 - $180 - provides the family with a water well - this prevents them having to cart water from long distances
$200 - provides a chicken coop and chickens - providing food for the family
$180 - provides a flood proof vertical garden - providing food for the family
$100 - provides rainwater harvest and collection system - enables them to grow the fruit and vegetables
$20 - enables us to plant a range of fruit trees, with good soil and bamboo protection
The balance would be used to provide essentials that the family needs according to their situation. This could be mosquito nets, cooking equipment or perhaps school materials.
We will be accepting payments by credit card for the first time this year through a mobile payment terminal at the event. Cash is also welcome. We will cover the credit card fees, so the full value of your donation will be received by HUSK. We will be visiting Siem Reap in February and will send photos (although HUSK send these as well). If anyone else wants to come in February, we can join together and help build a house.
In addition, the following items are useful for HUSK and we plan to send a large box out - perhaps everyone can dig around and see what they can find, or pop out to Primark or a charity shop...

- Shampoo / conditioner
- Toothbrushes - children's and adults
